100km
Treadmill Challenge by 100 women for charity
kicks-off two-day registration roadshow
Singapore, July 10, 2008 - Registration
for the third annual Great Eastern Women 10K, the biggest all-women
running event in Singapore and Asia, commenced today at a two-day
launch roadshow at Raffles Place. The race will be held on Sunday
26 October, 2008.
In conjunction with Great Eastern’s 100th anniversary, a
100km Treadmill Challenge by 100 Women was held at the
roadshow today in aid of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Fund. One
hundred women, including cancer survivors, corporate teams of the
major sponsors such as Great Eastern and adidas ran 1km each to
clock 100km.
Great Eastern’s Chairman, Mrs Fang Ai Lian, said: “We
are very pleased to be the title sponsor for the event again. This
year is especially significant for us as we turn 100. The Great
Eastern Women 10K is one of the key events in our year-long celebrations.
More than just a platform for women who are into fun and fitness
to participate, the run is also an opportunity for us to contribute
to women’s wellness by raising funds and creating greater
awareness of cervical cancer.”
For the second consecutive year, the Great Eastern Women 10K 2008
will continue its support for Singapore’s first-ever Cervical
Cancer Prevention Fund, set up by the Obstetrical & Gynecological
Society of Singapore and the Singapore Cancer Society to lead initiatives
such as education on cervical cancer prevention and free pap smear
screening for women to protect themselves against cervical cancer,
the second most prevalent cancer in women worldwide.
Race organiser Enterprise Sports Group (ESG), a regional sports
marketing company, expects a record sign-up of 10,000 runners this
year. More than 3,000 participants of previous years’ Women
10K Run have already registered during the Loyalty phase.
Terence Khoo, Managing Director of ESG reiterated, “This is
the third consecutive year that we are holding this run and I am
pleased to say that it is definitely becoming a major run in the
Singapore sports calendar. We strive to make it the biggest and
most professionally managed women’s run in Singapore and Asia.”
One of three sporting events of the Marina Bay Urban Challenge (MBUC)
jointly spearheaded by Urban Redevelopment Authority – the
Marina Bay Development Agency, and ESG to promote the Marina Bay
area as a vibrant hub for sports and lifestyle activities, the Great
Eastern Women 10K comprises a 10km competitive run and a 5km Fun

passing through iconic developments around the vibrant Bay such
as the statuesque Singapore Flyer and other scenic areas such as
Republic Boulevard, Esplanade Bridge and the waterfront promenade

to showcase our city, and in particular Marina Bay, as an exciting
and vibrant place to live, work and play in. Marina Bay is an ideal
site for fun-filled sporting activities like the Great Eastern Women
