Great Eastern Women 10K 2008
Raises $100,000
for BCF & CCPF
All-women sporting event to build on ‘Women Against Cancer’
campaign in 2009
Singapore, 1 June 2009 - In conjunction
with the Great Eastern Women 10K 2008, the 'Women Against Cancer'
charity initiative - championed by 10 women MPs - raised a total
of $100,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) and Cervical
Cancer Prevention Fund (CCPF).
Witnessed by guest-of-honour Mrs Lim Hwee Hua, Minister in Prime
Minister's Office and Second Minister for Finance and Transport,
Mr Ng Keng Hooi, Group CEO of Great Eastern Holdings, together with
Mr Terence Khoo, Managing Director of Enterprise Sports Group (ESG),
today presented a $50,000 cheque each to the two co-recipients of
the 'Women Against Cancer' fund at a ceremony held at Raffles Hotel's
Royal China restaurant.
The 'Women Against Cancer' charity initiative was started by Great
Eastern and Enterprise Sports Group in 2008, in conjunction with
the Great Eastern Women 10K, the biggest all-women sporting event
in Singapore and Asia with some 10,000 runners last year.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the BCF was General Manager, Ms
Christine Ang. With the funds, BCF will launch a new Breast Cancer
Awareness Education Programme targeted at female students in secondary
to tertiary schools.
The CCPF was represented by Singapore Cancer Society (SCS)'s Acting
CEO, Ms Cheng Lay Tin. Set up by the Obstetrical & Gynecological
Society of Singapore and SCS, CCPF is dedicated to raising awareness
among women in Singapore about cervical cancer.

New race elements include increased participation and new
kit sponsor
This year's Great Eastern Women 10K will take place on 1 November.
Title sponsor Great Eastern affirmed that it has committed to another
3 years of sponsorship for the run. To enhance its billing as the
biggest all-women race in Singapore, the 2009 race will raise its
participation numbers to 15,000, up from 10,000 last year. It will
also continue to support the 'Women Against Cancer' campaign to
raise cancer awareness and funds for needy patients.
The Great Eastern Women 10K 2009 will also boast two new sponsors
and new cash prize incentives of up to $5,000 for record breakers.
Mr Ng Keng Hooi, Group CEO of Great Eastern Holdings, said: "We're
very pleased that we have achieved our fund-raising target of $100,000
for the Breast Cancer Foundation and Cervical Cancer Prevention
Fund in 2008. The Great Eastern Women 10K is more than just a run
to promote healthy living and bonding among women. It also supports
a worthy cause. This is the motivation behind our continued sponsorship
of the event."
Mr Terence Khoo, Managing Director of ESG, co-organiser
of the 'Women Against cancer' initiative and overall organiser of
the race, said: "The Great Eastern Women 10K has grown to be an
event that is not all about the runners, spectators and sponsors,
but it also stands for a cause. Women Against Cancer is a great
opportunity for all of us to give back to society."

campaign in 2009 to raise cancer awareness. We hope more people

Government Whip; Ms Indranee Rajah, MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC; Dr

The Cervical Cancer Prevention Fund (CCPF) has been newly set up by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) and Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Singapore (OGSS) to reduce the disease burden of cervical cancer, one of the most preventable cancers in the world today.
The CCPF seeks to help reduce the burden of cervical cancer patients in Singapore through educating women and also helping in the needy cases of women who suffer from the disease.
